Jim Corbett National Park - An adventurous affair to remember
Having the distinction of being the oldest national park in India, Jim Corbett National Park or Corbett National Park as it is foundly called is a well known tiger reserve that is named after famous hunter and conservationist from the British era - Jim Corbett. Established in the year 1921, the park was rechrishned many a times with names like Hailey National Park and others, befors it was finally named Jim Corbett Park, a declared protected area for endangered Royal Indian Bengal Tiger.
Situated in the sub-Himalayan belt, the area is also well recognized for people intrested in ecotourism as it contains more than 488 different species of plants as well as a variety of fauna to make the surrounding jungle environs a adventerous affair to remember. Having emerged as the favourite place for tourists and wildlife lovers, the well maintained Corbett Tiger Reserve allows adventure seekers and wild life lovers an opportunity to see the thriving wildlife anjoying the nature's gifts admidst splendid surrounding landscape. The popularity of the park amongst both domestic and in-bound tourists can be seen fromthe fact that more than a lakh of tourists visit the park areas each year with a hidden secret wish to see the royal stripes live in action somewhere in this magical abode.
As India's first national park, Corbett National Park is spread over an area of 520.8 km2. The said area comprises areas like riverine belts, hills, marsh lands, lake areas and grass lands. Further, with elevation from sea level being 1,300 feet (400 m) to 4,000 feet (1,200 m), witers here are cold with days being bright and more enjoyable.
With seasonal rains coming in from July to September and surrounding water bodies supporting the park, visitors can see a dense deciduous forest that comprises of plant species like pipal, sal, haldu, rohini and other tree species. With the trees covering major portion of the Jim Corbett Natiomnal Tiger Reserve, a part of the area also comprises of grasslands that offers a close clear view of mammals, bird, reptile species and the most improtant of all The Bengal Tiger of India that resides here.
Past History:
. Formerly, some areas of park were part of princely state of Tehri Garhwal
. British administration considering possibility of creating game reserve and establishing reserve area by name of Hailey National Park
. Area renamed in 1954–55 as Ramganga National Park
. Again renamed in 1955–56 as Corbett National Park, honouring author and wildlife conservationist Jim Corbett
. In 1974, the location was choosen for launching Project Tiger, well known wildlife conservation project
. Area in reserve increased in 1991 as buffer for he Corbett Tiger Reserve including Kalagarh forest division, Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary
Present History:
. Covered under World Wildlife Fund, Corbett National Park emerging as one of thirteen protected areas
. Programme launched to protect three of five terrestrial main species Asian elephant, Tiger, Great One-horned Rhinoceros
. Temperate weather in park area with temperatures varying from 5 °C to 30 °C during winters and around 40 °C during summers at Jim Corbett National Park
. Around 488 different species of plants recorded in park environs including Sal forests, Jamun and others at Jim Corbett National Park
. Around 585 species of resident/migratory birds including blossom-headed parakeet, crested serpent eagle, red junglefowl at Jim Corbett National Park

Based at Ramnagar in Nainital district of Uttranchal, Corbett National Park covers an area of 521 km2 ands is well connected to surrounding places and national capital of India, Delhi through network of Trains (Ranikhet Express, AC Express, Uttranchal Sampark Kranti and others), Road network (through Rudrapur, Haldwani, Bazpur, Lucknow, Nainital, Ranikhet, Haridwar, Dehradun) and Air network (Airlines flying turbo propeller planes to Pant Nagar Airport).
For tourists, the best time for visits are from Mid-November to Mid-June. These visits can be taken using Jeep Safaris as well as Elephant Safaris. Tourists are requested to check with the park officials for change in timings and other official changes related to the tour to Jim Corbett National Park. These Safaris can be booked at Forest Department Ramnagar office as it is under discretion of forest department to put restriction on number of vehicles plying in each zone.
Jeep Safari - Advance Bookings
The facility of advance Jeep safari bookings in Corbett National Park are available only for safaris undertaken during morning timings in following zones:
. Bijrani
. Jhirna
. Durgadevi
Further, the bookings made are on first cum first serve basis and require non refundable advance deposited with details of traveller. For making advance bookings, photo identification documents are also required Indian and Foreign Nationals. While travelling, guests need to carry the same ID for cross verification purposes.
For doing bookings of Afternoon Jeep Safari, it is again on policyu of first cum first serve with people interested requiring personl presence at Ramnagar Forest Office to book this safari.
